What are Hawaii shimp trucks anyways?
In 1993, large-scale prawn farming began in Hawaii and was met with great success. These locally grown jumbo prawns, farmed in Kahuku, are sold to local restaurants and are also offered to the general public via humble shrimp trucks and shacks along Kamehameha Highway on the northeast shore. Several of these shrimp trucks sit along Kahuku's roadside, serving up fresh shrimp at a reasonable price. Shrimp scampi is a popular favorite, though many prefer to try the shrimp tempura, the fiery hot sauce shrimp, or the garlic shrimp. Pick up a plate and dine comfortably on a picnic table, soaking in the relaxed vibes of northern Oahu.
